ASEAN Film Festival 2026 - Intangible Cultural Heritage: Short Films from Timor-Leste

⊹ This is a public ASHK program offering complimentary tickets to ELA students.

Timor-Leste is rich in its traditional culture and rituals. This collection of short films showcases the intangible cultural heritage embodied in forms of music genre Tebe-Tebe, the artisan of music instrument Babadok, and the spirituality in architectural structure Uma Lulik.   

The short films were produced with the support of UNESCO and the International Information and Networking Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (ICHCAP).

(1) The Rise of GENRE TEBE-TEBE (A Song of Ancestors from Timor-Leste)

Director:  Domingos Flaviano Belo Correia Freitas (Mitu Freitas)

The dawn of the 21st century has witnessed the rise of Tebe-Tebe, a distinctive musical genre that is deeply rooted in the traditional rhythms and melodies of the Timorese people.  A harmonious blend of ancient cultural practices with modern musical influences.

(2) Babadok Instrument Production

Director:  Silvano Rodrigues Xavier

The sound of Babadok, a traditional percussion instrument from Timor-Leste, gives an aesthetic color to the movement and rhythm. From wood and animal skin, the hands of a craftsman creates an instrument of passion.

(3) Traditional Knowledge of Uma Lulik and Its Cultural Sites

Director:  Grazela Maria Albino

The story of Timorese Lia Nain (traditional elder) from Uma Lulik (Sacred House) Maununo Sakoko to perform rituals and ceremonies at Uma Lulik and its cultural sites, which connects the past to current and future generations in Timor-Leste.
