About the event

⊹ This is a public ASHK program offering complimentary tickets to ELA students.

To mark the conclusion of Singing and Dancing with Brush and Ink: The Art of Wesley Tongson, celebrated Canadian pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico will perform the Hong Kong debut of Canadian-Chinese composer Alice Ping Yee Ho’s new album The Imagined, featuring pieces such as Hong Kong Nostalgia, A Manic Ride through Lollipop Hell, and Pictures from an Imagined Exhibition –– inspired by Quilico’s paintings and Hong Kong experimental ink painter Wesley Tongson’s deeply resonant and dynamic compositions.

Written specifically for Quilico, listed as one of the “20 Can’t Miss Classical Pianists,” The Imagined translates the visual forms, stories, and resonant emotions of Quilico and Tongson’s work into a musical journey through an elevated landscape that exists only in the artists’ minds. This performance treats the piano not only as an instrument, but a vehicle through which to celebrate the transformative power of creativity, the dialogue between East and West, and the enduring capacity of music to evoke worlds both real and imagined.

Pianist - Christina Petrowska Quilico, C.M., OOnt, FRSC, is one of Canada’s most celebrated pianists, renowned for her artistry across Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary repertoire and her championing of Canadian composers. Named as one of the “20 Can’t Miss Classical Pianists” by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, she is also Honored with the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, in addition to serving as a professor at York University since 1987. Performing in Toronto, New York, Taipei, and beyond, she continues to premiere new works and inspire audiences with her virtuosity and innovation.

Composer- Alice Ping Yee Ho (何水頤) is a distinguished Chinese Canadian composer known for her eclectic, expressive works spanning opera, orchestral, chamber, dance, theatre, and electroacoustic music. She has received major honors including the 2024 Jules Léger Prize, the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize, the Dora Mavor Moore Award, and both the Barbara Pentland and Larry Wong Awards for her opera CHINATOWN, with librettist Madeleine Thien and Paul Yee. Performed by ensembles such as the Finnish Lapland Chamber Orchestra and the China National Symphony Orchestra, Ho’s music bridges Eastern and Western traditions with originality and emotional depth.
